So in the ATL we were having THE WORST problem with an OPTO unit. No, hell, I don't know much about that thing, except that it likes networking so I like it.
The problem was, this thing was coming up, asking for an Internet Address, ignoring it and going back to asking. Repeat until the second coming.
Thing is, its friend and identical twin was working like Gangbusters at work. No fun, because that was about 45 min away and driving there would be SO 1999.
Nah. We cut one port off the WRT54GL unit (actually an Asus WL500GPv1), like yesterday, created a virtual network (LAN not tunnel) to the one at the shop, and joined this one to it. So if you plug into ports 1-3, you're at home; if you plug into port4, though, you're at work. The OPTO unit comes up, starts whining for its IP address and the one at work thinks it's in the same room. BAM. Solved; at least past that part.
Thing is, with this kinda deal, you could be away; far away. Although that tiny unit in the pic to the right is useless for this kind of thing, it's not because it couldn't; just most of the gear in that thing there is the right size but too cheaped-out and sub-par to be useful for this kind of super-versatile work. But the point is, with something not much larger than that thing, one can completely hog some hotel's wifi network by downloading massive files from the iTunes in the next room ... across the country.Oh yeah. Want to be at work? Move network ports, refresh your stuff and you're there. Play some head to head ipod games with your buddy but you need to be on the 'same' wifi? No problem, even if you're in Japan. I back up data more quickly from 4000mi away than I do from 250mi away, so distance isn't directly an issue. Even fake out Google Latitude.
Happy traveling.
